One of the most understated parts of web design has always been the typography. Well, until recently. Now we often see a mismatch of type faces, text sizes and styles, and even unique typography overlaid on a hero image. But while some of these uses of typography can really drive sales and boost a website image, some can really miss the mark completely. So what is good typography? And what are the current typography trends in web design? Well, here at Pumpkin Web Design Manchester, we are Manchester’s leading web design experts. We work with companies and businesses across Manchester, and the surrounding area, including Wigan and Southport, to provide web design solutions that can help businesses grow. As a result, we have produced this guide to typography options in web design.
What are the effective typography options for web design?
For your website to really stand out, grab attention and drive sales, the typography needs to be effective. You should consider:
- Using bold block text
- Using mono-spaced fonts
- Using unique typography
Bold block text
One of the current typography trends we have seen emerging is the use of block, bold text, surrounded by colour. This creates an image in itself and replaces the hero image. For this to be successful, you need to make sure the text is easy to read, on all screen sizes. You don’t want the text to become too “bunched up” on a mobile device, so that the words cannot be read. This is a good way to celebrate a specific focus keyword related to your company or brand. Remember that whatever you choose will be a reflection of your brand. So it needs to keep inline with your principals.
Mono-spaced fonts
Mono-spaced fonts are reminiscent of the typewriter days, or computer programming. Each letter is within its own space, and each line has a small space in between. The general idea is that they create a sparse, minimalist feel and bring something completely different to web design. Especially when you consider that many websites feel over-designed. Mono-spaced text is the opposite. And it really works well both as a design feature, for drawing attention to the text, but also for areas that are particularly text heavy. Mono-spaced typography will look better in these spaces, and be easier to read.
Unique typography
Unique typography, such as those designed to look like handwriting or calligraphy, can be a very effective choice for a wide range of websites. This can be styled suitably to complement any companies branding scheme, from quirky and outgoing companies, to those that are reserved and serious. But you do need to ensure that this can be read easily, without issue, on any size screen or mobile device, so make sure to thoroughly test your chosen font.
