One of the most important parts of web design, is the design of the Call to Action (CTA) button. Whether it’s a button to encourage sign-ups or sales, the way you design this button can make all the difference to your success. Ultimately, it is the defining factor that will persuade your viewers to sign up or shop with your company. So, if designed well, the CTA can increase in conversions and boost sales. Here at Pumpkin Web Design Manchester, we are Manchester’s leading web design professionals. And we work with a range of businesses across the region to deliver high quality web design solutions. As a result, we have produced this checklist for designing Call to Action buttons.

Checklist for designing Call to Action buttons

  1. Is your CTA in a good place? Positioning your CTA in a place where it is most likely to get attention, and be clicked, is an important aspect of designing a CTA. You can try out your placement choices with 2 control groups and test the response. Follow the F copy rule that indicates that in the West, most people will skim your page in an F shape. This is something that has had a lot of research, using heat-mapping software.
  2. Does your CTA stand out? Call to Action buttons need to really grab the users attention, and draw attention to a particular area. If you choose to use a contrasting colour for your CTA, you can be sure that it will stand out from the background. And as a result, be easily visible. This can also help users to see what the next step is in their purchasing journey, and makes their whole user experience easier.
  3. Is your CTA the right size? If your CTA is to grab attention, it needs to be clearly visible. And once you have chosen the right colour, you need to choose the right size. CTA’s should be BIG. But at the same time, they need to fit within the design, and not be too overwhelming. As a result, it can take some extra time to get the design of the button just right. But the end result will definitely make the extra effort worthwhile.
  4. Is your CTA the right shape? Not only should your CTA be the perfect size and colour, it also needs to be the right shape. Square, rectangular, oval, circular or with rounded corners, the choice is yours. Just make sure it fits with the rest of your design choices.
  5. Is there enough white-space? Another aspect of creating a CTA that really stands out, is making sure it has enough white-space around it. Elements that are blended into one another can be effective on some websites. Especially where the text element and image elements are blurred. However, the CTA needs to stand apart, if you really want to draw attention to it.
