Following on from our latest article, “Website typography best practices”, we thought we’d talk about how you can use typography, and font types to your advantage. As long as you have all the practicalities in place, such as the size, and the spacing, there is no reason why you can’t use typography creatively. And it you do this correctly, you can create something that really stands out. Here at Pumpkin Web Design Manchester, we are Manchester’s leading web design experts. And we work with companies in a variety of sectors, to provide web design solutions that not only function, but also stand out too. As a result, we have produced this guide to typography ideas to engage your audience.
1.Use texture
Texture in web design is definitely underused. Especially with the increase in flat design in recent years. But that doesn’t mean texture shouldn’t be used in webdesign. In fact, a hero image that adds depth and texture, can draw attention to the website, and activate a completely different part of the human brain. Making for a more memorable experience.
But when you think of texture and typography, you probably think of tired 3D effects, and some clever shading. And this is essentially what you don’t want. However, typography that is used creatively to merge into a textured and blended background can be a great way to get users to actually read your content. Just take a look at some examples:
2. Keep it Simple
Another option that works effectively on a wide range of websites, is to use a simple font or typeface, and make it creative. You could:
- use animated effects or video to make your typeface really pop
- use image filled letters to turn your typography into a a statement
- Make subtle changes to colour for different letters
- make bold changes to colour for different letters- depending on your company branding and colour scheme
- Use bold text, at a large enough size
- Make sure the text colour contrasts perfectly with the background colour
3. Go OTT
If simple typography isn’t for you, go all out instead. Use decorative typography to really sell your message, and your style, to potential customers. Unique font styles can be:
- quirky and original
- energetic and playful
- serious and subdued
- modern or traditional
So whatever you choose, you need to make sure:
- your typography fits with your branding- are you a serious, or playful company? Would you suit bright colours or more subdued lettering? Whatever your brand personality is, you can find typography to really do your branding justice.
- The image you pair your typography with is plain and understated- unique typography itself is enough to engage your users. If you pair it with something too overpowering, you could be creating a distraction for viewers.
In summary
For typography to really engage your audience, you need to create something interesting and unusual. And different typography choices have different results, and offer different things. While simple typography can create interest, it needs to be interesting enough to stand out. Alternatively, unique typography needs to be paired with a less interesting background, to make sure the viewers attention isn’t split.
