And this can include website pop-ups. Pop-ups are one of the most contentious issues in web design. And they can seriously divide opinion. But when they are well designed, to fit with the rest of your web design, they can be incredibly effective. As a result, we have produced this guide to web design and using website pop-ups.
Using website pop-ups
There are many advantages to using pop-ups when they are designed correctly, and used at the right times. However, they are still creating a point of friction in web design. And they are still interrupting the user experience. No matter how well designed they are. So, to make sure that your users still feel positive about your website, there are some general rules you should stick to.
Web design and using website pop-ups: Rules for good practice
- Do NOT use pop-ups without a good reason. Pop-ups waste users time, and so interrupting their browsing experience for no real reason is a good way to lose business. And increase your bounce rate.
- DO make sure to design the pop-up to look equally as good as the rest of your website. Your users should be able to tell that the pop-up is part of your website. And not a malicious spam attack.
- DO make sure that your pop-ups are responsive.
- Do NOT waffle on. Make sure your pop-up is to the point and makes sense. If in doubt, write a draft, and then condense it.
- Do NOT ask for too many details on your pop-up. Just choose one piece of information to collect. And this should be the email address. If you ask for too much, it will feel like too much effort to give your company. And your customers will bounce.
- DO keep the pop-up relevant to the page it appears on.
- DO follow Google’s rules for mobile pop-ups. This means absolutely no interstitials, no over-sized modals, and no pop-ups on the first page!
- DO design different pop-ups for different devices. Your desktop and mobile popups should be different to take into account the difference in screen size.
- DO make it easy for users to get rid of your pop-up. An X in the top right is universally recognised. And if your pop-up has not been well received, an easy way to remove it means that the interruption will only cause a small annoyance. If users then struggle to find out how to close the pop-up, any business opportunity will be lost.
- DO make sure to set frequency rules. Users don’t need to see the same pop-up on every page. It’s just annoying!
